Howdy Meph-Heads!

Our first drop of 2025, Old School Blues (Old School Haze (Super Sativa Seed Club ‘85 cut) x Livers BX1), is the ultimate mesh of passion projects. Old School Haze from Super Sativa Seed Club is an almost 40-year-old clone-only variety. She is a strain we love and have worked with before, helping us create our Old School Mango Haze. Livers BX1 is the culmination of 10 years of work and 12 breeding generations and stands as our ode to what started it all for us. Our end goal was to create a homozygous variety of an autoflowering haze and we have to pat ourselves on the back with this one. Described by Jimbo as ‘cannabis caffeine’, this is the purest sativa high we’ve introduced into our catalogue so far. The drop is scheduled for the 13th of January at 1pm EU, 12pm UK, 7am Eastern, 4am Pacific.

A monstrous Old School Blues, grown by our own @Jimbo_Mephisto

Let’s dig straight into things with a little excerpt of the strain-description:

For those of you not up to speed with the Old School Haze lore, I would suggest checking out our interview with the creator of the strain, Karel, here.

Livers is a strain we at Mephisto are still in love with, now going on 25 years since we first sampled it in our hometown of Sheffield. Also known as Blues, Pukkas, UK Blues, Sheffield Blues or Sheffield Livers, she started life, as far as we know, as a Skunk #1 cross, the same as Old School Haze. We say ‘as far as we know’ because Livers has long been a bit of a mysterious strain, with the story and history behind it being mostly anecdotal. We were lucky enough to get our hands on a cutting of ‘The Blues’, a sister cutting of ‘The Livers’, way back before the farm was even a distant dream. Our first autoflower cross of this cutting, some 4 generations later, became Auto Blues.

When we finally acquired a cutting of ‘The Livers’, we outcrossed it to our Auto Blues to create Auto Livers, which was a big improvement of the Auto Blues, but we wanted to refine it and improve upon it even further, crossing it again to the Auto Livers, and working it back to auto in the subsequent four generations. Crossing with Auto Livers now at F4 to create our Livers BX1 strain, a strain that encompasses over 10 years of work and is what got us started with Mephisto Genetics in the first place.

So with you all caught up with the lore of a combined 50+ years of work from Super Sativa Seed Club and Mephisto Genetics, let’s get on to why we love Old School Blues. Put simply, we wanted to create a homozygous variety of an autoflowering haze. We knew as soon as we were allowed to sample Old School Haze at a BBQ at Karel’s house that we wanted to work the strain into autoflowering format. The shared heritage of the Old School Haze and our Livers BX1 kindled the shared nostalgia trip we absolutely love when hunting for new strains.

There are a few good reasons that most dispensaries don’t offer heavy sativa or haze-based strains; be that grow time or grow difficulty, with other strains available that increase turnaround time and profit for growers. However, with the work we’ve done creating our autoflowering Old School Blues, we can now offer a genuine shortcut to a legit haze/sativa experience in a fraction of the time.

Interview with Kees From Super Sativa Seed Club

Mitch: You obviously have such a legendary father within the community, how have you gone about forging your own path in the industry?

Kees: Yes many tips and tricks I have learned from my Dad. And I am still learning from him. But my @Ex.tractor solventless hash brand is my own pride and joy-filling project. I’ve learned to make hash on my own with many trials and errors. But never gave up on it, because the returns of making hash are just too much fun and mind-blowingly tasty. Actually, an ice water run with your auto Skywalker was one of the better things I have washed (almost 8 years ago now!) and was able to cure for more than 5 years and it was still smoking really good.

Me and my Dad still work together on a daily basis, we are growing in a legal facility (Aardachtig) an 850m² indoor, so never a dull moment with many hurdles to take… but with big rewards!

Karel, Kees' dad, at their legal indoor grow facility Aardachtig

We also have an organic fertilizer company together: Biotabs (I think you guys use the Biotabs for your breeding projects as well) that is doing pretty well lately, a very easy-to-use organic system where you mix all the micro-organisms bacteria and compost in the soil and then you only have to add water! Easy to use great smooth-smoking organic herbs…

Mitch: Tell us a little bit about your personal relationship with Old School Haze.

Kees: Yes the Old School Haze was the first weed plant I ever saw, trimmed and smoked for the first time. My Dad has been preserving her here for more than 35 years now. And we still grow here on occasion also doing some breeding with her as well with some crazy results. Some very stable plants that tend to get super big with different pheno’s, varying in huge fluffy nugs and big tight buds. Another cool thing about the Old School Haze is she is pretty PM [Powdery Mildew] resistant so she can perform pretty well indoors and outdoors. When you grow this lady indoors make sure your ceiling is high enough, or she grows through the lights… [In photoperiod format]

Mitch: Yes we need to get you some beans to try! Both the Old School Mango Haze and Old School Blues do have the potential to get pretty beastly in Autoflower format, but are definitely a lot more tame-able and user-friendly than the pure cut.

Mitch: How did you get Super Sativa Seed Club back up and running after such a long hiatus?

Kees: Actually you guys were partly to blame for the relaunch! It was on the back burner for a while and we wanted to restart. it When we met you guys and saw what you were doing on the farm. I got extra inspired, and I suggested to my Dad to restart the SSSC again. We also just moved to Barcelona and we were just doing the Biotabs thing.

We had some time and space left, so we started breeding in some small tents again. We started with crossing the Old School Haze x Chemdog OG Fire - from Humboldt HSO and then what came out was so fire [pun intended], when we were testing it, my Dad, said “I am not afraid to put my name to this plant”, I said well then this is the Karel’s Haze and that was the strain we focused our relaunch on, following with many other Sativa crosses, now we have many hybrids crossed available since the market likes these a lot.

Mitch: What are your thoughts on Autoflowers?

Kees: Never was really stoked about them. In the start, many plants had this green spinach smell and I did not like the terps, also had some runs with stunted plants, which was demotivating. But I kept trying, when I grew your Sour Stomper,  Sour Livers and Skywalker it changed my mind. Medium tall plants filled with resinous flowers that were washable as well and in record time. Since then I’ve liked autos, also I like growing them outdoors. Low maintenance with pretty results for commercial purposes. I Have tried other autoflower brands, although these can be shitty. Due to that, I have learned that the breeder's touch is deffo important for autoflowers.

Mitch: Any funny anecdotes about the Mephisto crew we can share publicly?

Kees: Hahaha yes! I have had many fun nights and holidays with you guys. Tim and Mitch always make me smile and you also have had cool staff members. I remember a birthday night of Tim where we drank cocktails from a donkey's ass…[Mitch: It was a speakeasy bar in Barcelona with funky glasses - nothing to get twisted! 😅] Proper BBQ seshes at the farm and many proper joints. A holiday in Bali with Mitch celebrating our birthdays with mouldy shrooms, fake drugs and pretty ladies. You can fill in the details…

Never a dull moment with the Mephisto boys…

Mitch and Kees on their holiday to Bali
Mitch: What are you up to these days? Let us promote some of your shit!

Kees:
These days I’m concentrating on legal growing with my family, the Extractor Hash brand and I try to keep my BMX free of rust. Many balls to keep in the air so am pretty busy every day. Miss you guys a lot. When I get back to Barcelona deffo am gonna hit you guys up, for some nostalgic great times. Keep rocking you guys!💚🥇🔥🔝

A New Limited Edition Drop, a free strain and an early-adopter discount!

Along with Old School Blues, we’re also introducing a brand new lineup of Limited Editions. A little explanation for those just getting on board the Mephisto train: Originally the Mephisto Genetics Limited Edition line was intended to be a genuine once-and-done Limited Edition offering, which back in the day could have been seeds just from one plant, however, as our little company has grown and evolved over the years so did the line and the methodology behind it. As demand grew and we wanted to get these gems into more customers' hands, Limiteds became a further worked strain, taken to F3 with more seeds available. However, we’ve switched up our breeding processes for this new format whereby we’ll release our brand new strain with carefully selected standout hybrids to accompany them.

On drop day expect a choice of 9 Old School Blues true Limited Editions F1 hybrids, only available in feminised 5 seed packs at mephistogenetics.com. Here’s a preview of what you can expect:

Blood Orange Blues
Blood Orange Haze x Old School Blues
Haze² with a hint of citrusy orange goodness. A plant on the larger size, with good internodal spacing and thick, emerald leaves. With a chance to purple up too, we expect her to be a particularly photogenic girl. On the easier side to grow than her parentage from the Old School Blues, expect to keep up with defoliation as she can bush out. Brad’s pick for this drop!

Blue Persuasion
Skylar White x Old School Blues
Old School Blues will give a little extra size to the Skylar White, enhancing yields but taming what can be a more finicky beast in the Old School Blues. Expect a piney flavour with a citrus cream kick.

Boda Azul
Mephisto's Wedding x Old School Blues
Make sure your carbon filters are prepared for what could be a particularly stinky girl. Uplifting but with a soothing edge from the Mephisto’s Wedding parentage, expect flavours of pine, gas, fruit and grape. Expect a more classic indica-leaning hybrid high.

Cobalt Kiwi
El Chemi Kiwi x Old School Blues
Expect the Sour Stomper and Creme de la Chem in the parentage of El Chemi Kiwi to add a spectrum of flavours to the haze of the Old School Blues, with fruit, gas and funk. Classic OG Kush-style highs are inbound. A slightly smaller plant than the Old School Blues, but maintaining weight on every single bud site, this is not one to sleep on this drop.

Ectoplasma
Ghost Toof x Old School Blues
We described our Old School Blues as cannabis caffeine, and that won’t be dulled by the instant zing that Ghost Toof is renowned for. Expect strong branching, so might well need to be tamed - an excellent candidate for those of you wanting to practice training techniques on autoflowering strains.

Eiffel 65
Forgotten Cookies x Old School Blues
A complex web of flavours, with pine and fruit, cookies, chocolatey earth, sour notes, sweet spots and floral undertones. Expect a mid to large-size plant, with the Forgotten Cookies parentage easing the grow process and making her a little easier to tame. She’s a great social strain, with an uplifting and chatty high.

Indigo Haze
Pigletta's Purple Haze x Old School Blues
Cheese and haze with a penchant for packing on the pounds. We expect a high-yielding plant, with lots of bud sites covering her branches. Lots of energy in the smoke, another great strain to pass around and share in social settings. Flavours are haze, gas and cheese with lemon undertones.

Remulak Reefer
Alien vs Triangle x Old School Blues
A true big booty bitch. Expect dense buds, laced in frost, all over a tall and wide frame. One for the high-tolerance smokers, we expect knockout power with a tantalising flavour profile of spice, pine and fruit.

Sundae Schooled
Sundae Thumper x Old School Blues
Sundae Thumper brings some sweeter notes to the almost pure haze of the Old School Blues. Expect the creative spark to shine before she settles to the body and mellows out. Potential to overwhelm to smell of any tent, but we don’t expect that to ever be a bad thing.

And last but not least…

Sapphire Fire
24 Carat x Old School Blues
Our most hybrid option is on the menu this time round. Expect the best of both worlds and a more savoury flavour profile, with piney and earthy notes throughout. Be prepared for some light training to keep her foliage in check to encourage budsites lower down to beef up.

Funky Blues
Funky Mangifera x Old School Blues
Livers and livers and mango. A large plant with plenty of potential for big yields, you can expect a more fruity smoke to the Old School Blues. A fantastic cerebral high will follow and a great social smoke.

A 5-pack of either Sapphire Fire or Funky Blues will be included with all orders containing either Old School Blues 3 seed packs or Old School Blues Limited Edition seed until 11:59 pm PST on Sunday 26th January, or
